Q&A: Cannibalism

Despite the implication of the answer given in the audio, the bible is not entirely silent on the issue of cannibalism. However, it does not seem to directly deny the practice either (that's not to say it is ok).

Several statements are made about cannibalism (Leviticus 26:29, Deuteronomy 28:53, Isaiah 9:20, Isaiah 49:26, Jeremiah 19:9, Zechariah 11:9), however, these verses would appear to be descriptions of the depths of suffering that will occur not endorsements of the practice.

There is biblical support for God removing His blessing and letting people suffer the full consequences of their sinful lives (Micah 6:16, Proverbs 29:1, Romans 1). There is a point where we have so hardened our hearts against God that He simply bows out and lets us do it our own way, which leads us deeper in to depravity and wickedness. The instances of cannibalism mentioned above seem to be describing those times where part of God's judgment is to simply leave the people alone and let wickedness run its course. That being the case, cannibalism seems to be listed in the outcomes of wickedness which will be suffered when God leaves His people to themselves. That would clearly place it is an act of evil.

As for any specific statement forbidding cannibalism, I am not aware of any. However, as was previously discussed regarding animals, mankind has been set apart from the rest of creation. We are created in the likeness of God (Genesis 1:26, Genesis 5:1, James 3:9). Animals are food. People are not.

Perhaps that is a bit simplistic, but there you have it.
